Finger Heart Rate Monitor
One of the least expensive types of heart rate monitor is the finger heart rate monitor. This type of monitor can be found integrated into many modern gym machines like the elliptical, stair climber and of course the treadmill. These handy little monitors read your heart rate when you place one or two fingers on the pad. This is similar to the same technology used with ECGs and chest strap monitors because the heart gives out an electrical signal that can be detected through the skin.
But are these monitors as accurate as the ones that go on your chest? Some experts would say no. It seems the consensus is that chest strap heart monitors are simply better, however there are some very appealing finger monitors on the market today. You may prefer a monitor that goes on your finger as opposed to one that has to be strapped to your bare chest. And, you'll most likely pay less as well because finger monitors are on average less expensive than the chest strap kind.
One of the top monitors out there is the Lifespan Fitness Heart Monitor Ring. This device is quite affordable at only around $30 and uses infrared technology to detect and monitor the heart rate of the user. This ring is a one-size-fits-all piece thanks to the silicone finger insert that allows it to fit small slender fingers in addition to bigger ones. The display on this ring is easy to read and features a heart rate reading, clock and stopwatch feature. It is quite basic in its features but may be all you need for your workouts. If all you need to know is your heart rate, why spend more on a monitor with a lot of extra features?
The finger heart rate monitor is ideal for anyone who wants to monitor their heart rate while exercising but doesn't want to spend a fortune or deal with the hassle of more sophisticated models like chest strap transmitters and GPS enabled receivers. Sure, these high-tech heart monitors are great for pro athletes training for events, but for the average person a finger monitor should be just fine. You can always upgrade your heart rate monitor if you decide you want one with more advanced capabilities.
