Heart Rate Monitor Chest
There are two main types of heart monitors -- those that use chest straps and those that detect the pulse rate. Heart monitor chest straps provide the most accurate information. They are made to fit closely around the chest and work just like an ECG. The data collected is displayed on the monitor, which is normally worn on the wrist or attached to the treadmill or cycle being used. It is important to keep the chest strap properly positioned or readings may be less accurate or completely incorrect. Luckily these monitors with straps are easy to put on and take off and work quite well.
One thing a heart monitor can do is tell you whether or not you are exercising in the fat burning zone. This zone depends on your target heart rate which varies from person to person. With a monitor you find out exactly what it is and can easily keep track of your data. When it comes to cardiovascular exercise your heart rate makes a big difference in the efficiency of your workouts. If you work out with a friend or in a group, a monitor is important because your target heart rate may be different from the person's right next to you.
If you are someone who works out with a friend or in a group setting, choose a monitor that has a no-crosstalk feature. This means the monitor will not interfere with other monitors or receive interference from them. Many of the top brands on the market come with this feature and many others. The newest type of monitor to hit the market is the GPS heart rate monitor. Equipped with a global positioning system, this type of monitor shows you exactly how far you've traveled and where you need to go based on your preferred route.
For people who don't want to wear heart rate monitor chest straps there are pulse monitors that can be used. These monitors usually take your pulse when you place two fingers on the sensors. The downside to these is that you are unable to get a constant reading like you can with the chest strap monitors. However for the beginner who doesn't want to spend a lot of money or wear any kind of apparatus around their chest a pulse monitor is a good start.
